Irish Wolf Hound Teaches About Life to a Family

I read a story today of a Vet that had to put a family dog, a Irish Wolf Hound, down and how the six year old little boy living with him, dealt with the situation from the wisdom of youth. I wish for you and I the ability to do the same as we traverse this life.

This is a quote from the Vet: "The dog's owners, Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their little boy, Shane, were all very attached to Belker. I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home. As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience."

The family surrounded their dog and the Vet administered the euthanasia procedure right there  in their home. After the long silence, as the family pet of 10 years, who had become a valued member of their family, slipped away into a peaceful passing. Quite surprisingly the boy took the passing of his life long pet rather well and without much trauma. The young child offered the wisdom I speak of here when confronted with the question of why dogs don't live as long as humans. The child said of his canine companion that had lived with his whole life, the following:

"People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life--like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?" The six-year-old continued, "Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."

I encourage you to internalize this wisdom as a lighthouse for each day. And if you need to be reminded, let every dog you see, no matter what kind it may be, sound a trumpet of sanity in this deafening world we live... Look at all the things that your dog does everyday and see if they could be applied to your life.

Maybe you could come up with a list of things that dogs do that would serve you well. Like "stretching when you get up". The article I quoted here has a whole list of them but try to come up with your own before you check their's out.

It is not unusual for messages like this to be sent to you in many many different situations of life. We just have to have our antennas up and be tuned into the broadcasting station.

Here is an important message if you have your antenna up... We as dog owners can do to help prevent the sickness and worse of our favorite friends by making sure our canine companions eat right. Watch this important video for the latest facts about what to do and not to do to give your dog what they need.
